Sal Martella grew up on the lower east side of New York City, and was drafted into the Army on September 7, 1966. He completed Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and advanced training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, before being assigned to the 5th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado. He deployed to Vietnam in December, 1968, arriving at the 4th Infantry Division in time for the Tet Offensive and the “mini-Tet” that followed. He returned home on August 30, 1968. In this interview, he describes his childhood, Army training, and deploying to Vietnam. He recounts many of his experiences in Vietnam, and his return to the United States. He talks about Post-Traumatic Stress, the Veterans Administration, and the Vietnam War Veterans Association. Finally, he talks about his efforts to educate school children about the war in Vietnam.
